The DeWitt Fire District, located at 4500 East Genesee Street, DeWitt, NY 13214, has a rich history of service and dedication to the community. Established in 1932, the department has evolved significantly over the decades, both in infrastructure and apparatus.

Historical Milestones:

  • January 1934: The department's early fleet featured a 1923 Chevrolet, built and outfitted by its members. Notably, this apparatus did not have a pump, highlighting the resourcefulness and commitment of the original team.

  • 1939: The cornerstone for the original fire station was laid at the current site, marking the beginning of a long-standing presence in the community.

  • Late 1940s: The fleet expanded to include Truck-3, Engine-2, and Engine-1, all housed in the original station. The signage from this era remains proudly displayed in the current station, serving as a testament to the department's enduring legacy.

  • 1953: The fleet comprised a chief's car, Truck-3, Engine-2, Engine-1, and M-4, reflecting the department's growth and increasing capabilities.

  • Early 1960s: Additions to the fleet included a rescue unit (M-5) alongside the existing apparatus, enhancing the department's emergency response capabilities.

  • Circa 1972: The east bays of the station were adorned for a firefighter’s convention, showcasing the department's pride and community involvement.

  • 1975: A west bay addition was completed, expanding the original fire station to accommodate a growing fleet and staff.

  • 2007: Renovations were made to the original fire station, modernizing facilities while preserving historical elements.

  • 2008: The current fire station opened in June, following planning and construction efforts that began in 2006.

A notable feature of the station is the weather vane depicting a firefighting scene. First installed atop the east bays in the late 1960s, it was later moved to the clock tower during renovations in the 1980s. The weather vane was preserved and placed on the new station in 2008, symbolizing the department's respect for its history and traditions.

The DeWitt Fire District continues to honor its past while embracing advancements in firefighting technology and techniques, ensuring the safety and well-being of the community it serves.
