Why the DeWitt Fire District Uses the Knox-Box System
As technology advances, traditional methods of key storage for alarmed buildings and residences have become inefficient, often leading to delays in emergency response. To address this issue, the DeWitt Fire District has adopted the Knox-Box Rapid Entry System to enhance emergency access, reduce response times, and minimize forced entry damage.
Benefits of the Knox-Box System
Rapid Emergency Access
- During an emergency, time is critical. If an alarm is triggered in an unoccupied building, waiting for a key holder to arrive can significantly delay response efforts. A Knox-Box allows firefighters and emergency personnel to enter immediately.
Secure Key Storage
- The Knox-Box securely stores master keys, access cards, alarm panel keys, elevator mechanical room keys, and contact information in a durable, tamper-resistant enclosure.
Authorized Personnel Only
- The Knox-Box can only be accessed by authorized fire and emergency personnel, ensuring the security of its contents.
Security Features of the Knox-Box
- Constructed of ¼" solid steel with a ½" steel door and reinforced locking mechanism
- UL-listed against physical attacks
- Features a Medeco high-security lock, designed to resist drilling, picking, and forced entry
- Used by over 7,000 fire departments nationwide
The master key to access the Knox-Box is exclusively controlled by the DeWitt Fire District. This key is highly secured and produced only by the Medeco factory under the authorization of a fire official.
After installation near your property’s entrance, our department will place your master keys, access cards, and emergency contact information inside the Knox-Box, ensuring quick access during a crisis.
