| The DeWitt Fire Department gathered last night at The Craftsman Inn for its Annual Awards Banquet, a night dedicated to recognizing the dedication and achievements of its members. Among the many honorees, the department had the distinct privilege of celebrating President and Past Deputy Chief David Steinberg for an incredible 50 years of service.
David’s fire service journey began as an Explorer, later becoming a firefighter and holding numerous executive and operational leadership roles within the department. Over the years, he has received multiple department accolades, including the Chief’s Award, Merit Award, Valor Award, and President’s Award, and was a top responder for many years. His impact extends beyond emergency response—he has served on nearly every committee and has been instrumental in organizing many department events.
David’s service reaches well beyond DeWitt. He has contributed to the fire service at the county and state levels, holding key leadership positions such as:
President, Onondaga County Fire Chiefs Association Vice-President, Onondaga County Volunteer Firefighters Association Chairman, Onondaga County Fire Advisory Board & EMS Advisory Board Member, Onondaga County 911 Committees & Town of DeWitt Fire Advisory Board Board of Directors, Syracuse & Onondaga County Fire Museum Board of Directors, C.N.Y. S.P.A.A.M.F.A.A. (Society for the Preservation and Appreciation of Antique Motor Fire Apparatus in America) In recognition of his extraordinary commitment, Chief Green presented David with the Gordon Ingram Meritorious Service Award and the Levi Waters Volunteer Achievement Award. He also received special honors from:
Firefighters Association of the State of New York – presented by representative Marty Thomas Onondaga County Volunteer Firefighter’s Association (OCVFA) – “Red Jacket of Distinction” Award, presented by Past President Marty Pine Onondaga County Fire Chiefs Association – presented by President Tom Bouvia Onondaga County Executive J. Ryan McMahon – Proclamation presented by Melissa Abend of the Onondaga County Department of Emergency Management New York State Assembly Citation – presented by Assemblywoman Pamela Hunter (128th District) David’s dedication, leadership, and passion for the fire service have left an enduring impact on the DeWitt Fire Department and the broader firefighting community.
